What is Schools for Healthy Lifestyles?

 Mission:

To promote and maintain healthy lifestyle choices in Oklahoma through preventive, community-based school health education programs for students, their families and faculty

 Schools for Healthy Lifestyles priority areas:

  • Promotion of physical activity and fitness
  • Nutrition education
  • Tobacco use prevention
  • Injury prevention

 Health Statistics:

  • Obesity affects 1 in 5 children in the US
  • Almost 75% of young people do not eat recommended number of servings of fruit/vegetables each day
  • Each day, 3000 children start smoking – 1 every 30 seconds
  • Unintentional injuries are the number one killer of ages 4 and under

 Students who engage in positive health behaviors have:

  • Higher graduation rates
  • Better grades
  • Increased performance on standardized tests
  • Improved attendance
  • Lower dropout rates
  • Fewer behavioral problems
  • More participation in school activities
  • Higher aspirations for post secondary education

 A healthy lifestyle not only impacts our quality of life now, but every day of our future as well.  Many of today’s leading health problems including heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and injuries are due to poor lifestyle choices and are largely preventable.
